Wisconsin Supreme Court’s New Leftist Majority Targets Catholic Charities, and Tammy Baldwin Approves

Leftist justices in Wisconsin persecute Catholic Charities, saying helping disabled individuals does not count as a religious activity.

In March, the Wisconsin Supreme Court ruled that the Catholic Charities Bureau would no longer be exempt from paying unemployment taxes because the work they do to assist those with disabilities is not primarily for religious purposes. In other words, providing charity and volunteering isn’t religious enough—what?

The decision, rendered in a 4–3 vote, was made possible by the Left’s capture of the court in 2023, when “progressive” justice Janet Protasiewicz was elected with an endorsement from Sen. Baldwin. The ruling is a blatant violation of the Catholic Charities Bureau’s First Amendment religious protections and further highlights an ongoing trend of Catholic persecution under leftist ideology.

Restoration News reached out to Sen. Baldwin, asking her opinion of the court’s decisions to violate the First Amendment Rights of Catholic Charities Bureau. She did not respond.

Leftist justice Ann Walsh Bradley wrote in the opinion, “The Establishment Clause does not treat religion as a third rail that courts cannot touch. Rather, it ensures that the inevitable ‘degree of involvement’ in such a determination does not cross into an evaluation of religious dogma.”

Conservative justice Rebecca Bradley condemned the decision in a dissent. Bradley said a nonprofit only needs to be operated primarily for religious purposes to be exempt from paying employment taxes. Conservative Justice Annette Ziegler and Justice Brian Hagedorn agreed with the majority of Bradley’s dissent.

The ruling followed an appeals court decision that upheld a ruling by the Labor and Industry Review Commission that stated Superior Diocese’s Catholic Charities Bureau and four sub-entities had to pay unemployment taxes.

Anti-Catholic Activity Across the Nation

The Wisconsin Supreme Court decision to violate Catholic Charities Bureau’s First Amendment religious protections is the most recent development in an onslaught of anti-Catholic activities in America.

In recent years, President Joe Biden’s FBI has targeted many Catholics and labeled them domestic terrorists. In December, the House Judiciary Committee and its Select Subcommittee on the Weaponization of the Federal Government released a report on the weaponization of law enforcement against Catholic Americans.

The committee released the report after it found that the FBI’s investigation into Catholics was potentially much more expansive than reported.

“Good heavens, director, this is one of the most outrageous targetings—you have mobilized your division, the most powerful law enforcement division in the world, against traditionalist Catholics … and you just told us you have not fired a single person,” Sen. Josh Hawley said to FBI Director Christopher Wray.

The report dug into the FBI’s activities and highlighted a now-redacted memo that alleged a link between so-called “radical traditionalist Catholics” and “the far-right white nationalist movement.” The memo further suggested “trip wire or source development” within parishes that offer the Traditional Latin Mass and within online communities.

In Character for Baldwin

Sen. Baldwin’s support for Justice Protasiewicz and the Wisconsin Supreme Court’s decision only further establishes that she does not stand for law-abiding Americans in Wisconsin. Instead, she bows to the “progressive” dogma of the Left.

Baldwin supports universal background checks—criticized by 2A advocates as a sneaky way to create an illegal and unconstitutional gun registry—and seeks a ban on over 250 everyday firearms wrongly described as “assault weapons.” She also ignored Restoration News when asked if she would support the next development in “progressive” gun control—a system of banking that creates a background gun registry by tracking firearm and ammunition purchases.

Baldwin doesn’t seem to care for struggling seniors, either. Joe Biden wants to force Americans out of the fossil fuel industry. Biden has done so, in part, by using Medicare “savings” created by the improperly named Inflation Reduction Act to finance EVs.

The act was supposed to compel pharmaceutical companies to accept lower Medicare reimbursement. Only 15 percent of the money actually went to helping seniors. Sen. Baldwin betrayed Americans and voted in favor of the Biden administration’s extreme “green” ideology.

Moving Left

Sen. Baldwin and the Wisconsin Supreme Court highlight the current shift in American politics. By bowing to leftist dogma, justices and legislators are betraying the Constitution and the values law-abiding Americans hold dear.

Time to vote them out.
